Bezzecchi wins the San Marino Grand Prix 2026 at Misano in a race of tactical strategy

Bezzecchi wins the San Marino Grand Prix 2026 at Misano in a race of tactical strategy

He arrived at Misano with the right pace. In the morning warm-up, Bezzecchi had broken the 1:31 barrier, the only one below that mark, but the advantage over Márquez was not comfortable. It never is at Misano when there is a red Ducati on the asphalt.

The start was clean. Bezzecchi controlled from the first corner. It was not an explosive start, but an efficient one, that of a rider who already knew where he needed to spend energy and where not to. Márquez started second, watchful. Behind, the Italian pack crowded together searching for clean air: Martín did not feel "at the level" of his pursuers, a statement that would weigh more as the laps progressed.

The first twenty laps set the pace. Bezzecchi maintained a steady rhythm, without pushing too hard, without relaxing. It was the middle-distance race that Misano demands: whoever tries to win on lap one ends up losing on lap thirty. Márquez pressed, looking for an error, testing mid-corner if there was any recovery possible. Nothing. The rhythm of number 72 was solid.

Lap 23. That was the breaking point. On the slow-speed braking line, Márquez attempted the inside attack. Bezzecchi closed the line without aggression, without contact, but made clear that the line was not for two. The manoeuvre lasted one second. Marc withdrew. That tactical decision, probably the most important of the afternoon, marked psychologically the rest of the race. Márquez still rode fast, but no longer attacked. He merely followed.

The degradation of the rear tyre, the determining factor at Misano, played in favour of the winner. Bezzecchi had built his strategy from Friday with that central problem: how to reach lap 25 without the rear tyre becoming an obstacle. He ran high on pressure, contained acceleration on corner exit, carried the weight towards the front axle. Small details that added up.

Marc Márquez crossed the line 1.3 seconds behind. Fast, consistent, but without the magic the moment demanded. Third place went to Acosta, who on Saturday's Sprint had been caught up in the incident with Aldeguer, a touch that both described as "conneries", as things of hard racing. Over the longer distance, Acosta could not break through the front, although he rode with ease. The feeling in the paddock was that the KTM carried pace but that Bezzecchi and Márquez operated in another league this weekend.

The complete podium held the balance of current power dynamics. Red Ducati won. Black Ducati pursued. KTM climbed to third position. Aprilia, which displayed its special 'Perla Bianca' livery in homage to Vespa and Gilles Villeneuve, failed to break into the top three, a fact suggesting that the aesthetic change brought no dynamic shift.

In championship terms, the victory brought Bezzecchi closer to the leaders. Every point at Misano counts double here: the Ducati territory, the home track of Borgo Panigale, the crowd that sings in Italian when the reds complete a clean lap. After this race, the battle for the title remained open but with Bezzecchi recovering ground.

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli remains what it has always been: an engineer's track, not a hero's track. Whoever manages the rear tyres better, whoever controls the asphalt temperature better at turn three and eight, whoever does not waste on corner exit, that is who lifts the trophy. Bezzecchi did it to perfection. Márquez tried to break that script. He could not. That is Misano.

Saturday's Sprint had left clues. Bezzecchi won the short race, an indicator that the pace was his. The incident between Acosta and Aldeguer, two young riders who borrowed the track from each other, served as a reminder: on Saturday everything is forgiven more easily. On Sunday, every move has consequences. Acosta absorbed that. Aldeguer too. The MotoGP industry manufactures riders with that tactical intelligence earlier and earlier.

With this victory, Bezzecchi added his second of the year. The general championship standings tighten after Misano, with pursuers calibrating their options for the remaining races. The calendar maintains pace: circuits remain that historically favour other riders, other manufacturers. But today, at Misano, the territory was red.

The next stop is the full season calendar to consult, though there is already debate in the garages about which circuit will break this Ducati momentum. Misano sealed a chapter. Not the final one, but a definitive one in the battle for the title.
